Punjab Irrigation Department traces its roots to the 4000-year-old civilizations of the Indus Valley at Mohenjodaro and Harrapa. It is a provincial department which is divided into 8 operational zones, i.e. Multan, Potohar, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Lahore, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, and DG Khan. Currently, it provides irrigation to 21 million acres of land that is devoted to agriculture. As a result, this department managed to turn the dry lands of the province into a grazing area for livestock, resulting in prosperity for the people and enhancing the livelihood of the farmers. As irrigated agriculture generates 20 % of Punjab’s GDP and provides work for 50 % of the provincial workforce, it plays a significant part in Punjab’s economic growth. The infrastructure also serves 21.71 million acres (8.79 million hectares) of cultivation land, based on cropping intensities that typically range from 120-150%. This department has over 35,000 employees who provide valuable services for the convenience of local farmers. Mr. Aamer Khattak is the Secretary responsible for this department.
